9-1-1 calls: avoid pocket dials

Emergency Reasons Only

Calling to speak with a police officer, obtaining road conditions, requesting a taxi, or reporting a theft that occurred earlier in the day are not considered emergency calls. Calling 9-1-1 is for emergencies only, and every minute counts.

Call 9-1-1 where in these situations:

  • Person or property in serious danger

  • Life-threatening or medical situation

  • Fire

  • Serious accident

  • Crime in progress

  • Exposure to, inhalation or swallowing of a poisonous substance (source: Government of NB)

Know exactly where you are

Providing a complete civic address, including the street name and municipality will save valuable time which is critical in times of emergencies.

Avoid pocket dials

Keep your mobile phone locked with a passcode, so it doesn’t call 9-1-1 without you knowing.  A cell phone without a SIM card can still signal 9-1-1. For example, it’s important not to lend your smartphone to a child, because even if the phone is deactivated, the 9-1-1 function is still on.

The Edmundston Police Force thanks you for your cooperation and reminds you that in case of an emergency, every minute counts.
