Urban forestry is the sustainable management of trees, forests, and green spaces found in cities, which improve quality of life, the environment, and public health. It encompasses planning, planting, and maintenance for ecological benefits (clean air, biodiversity, combating urban heat islands) and social benefits (well-being, aesthetics).
The City of Edmundston's Parks and Gardens team, responsible for managing the urban forest, was particularly busy in 2025, carrying out:
- Planting and protecting young trees;
- Formative pruning and trimming;
- Phytosanitary monitoring;
- Tree assessments;
- Issuing tree removal permits; and
- Processing citizen requests
In addition, various development projects are underway to continuously improve urban forest management. Here are some highlights:
- 170 citizen requests related to trees resolved;
- 373 new trees planted and protected within the territory of Edmundston;
- Several young trees pruned and trimmed in municipal parks and green spaces;
- Monitoring, communications, and interventions related to forest tent caterpillar populations, as well as 55 dead trees cut down due to emerald ash borer infestation;
- 25 tree-felling permits issued to citizens, out of a total of 36 applications;
- New urban forestry master plan presented and officially adopted;
- Redevelopment of the green waste recovery site on Titus Road has begun
“In 2026, the Green Spaces team will continue to manage the urban forestry program to ensure sound management of our green resources,” explained Daniel Gautreau, Green Spaces Coordinator. “In addition, several major projects will be added, including finalizing the municipal woodland management plan and a complete review of the tree policy, as well as continuing the implementation of the urban forestry master plan,” he concluded.
