Good news in Edmundston: New housing construction starts!

Good news in Edmundston: New housing construction starts!

The City of Edmundston is pleased to announce the official launch of the new housing construction period, marking an important step in the acceleration of residential construction within the city. These projects, on both municipal and private land, are part of a concerted effort to meet the growing housing needs in our community.

Mayor Eric Marquis underlined his enthusiasm at this important milestone: "I'm truy delighted to see the first shovels hitting the ground for these new projects. Today, I had the pleasure of taking part in the groundbreaking for the 60-unit project on Mgr. Numa-Pichette Boulevard... with a bulldozer to boot! It's a moment we've been looking forward to, and I'm proud that we're moving forward.”

This major project will be carried out by a consortium made up of B3D2 Immobilier inc. and local developers Jérôme Bossé and Timmy Bossé.  Olivier Boisvert, representing the developers of this 60-unit project on Mgr. Numa-Pichette Blvd, is equally enthusiastic: "Good news! We're starting work and we're proud to be building our first project in Edmundston! It's incredibly motivating to work with a proactive city that's putting the right conditions in place to make new housing a reality.”

For her part, housing coordinator Isabelle Laplante points out that efforts to reach the objective of 230 authorized units by the end of 2026 are progressing at a good pace: "With the allocation of the first five municipal lots following calls for projects, we already have a firm commitment for 173 units, which represents more than 75% of our objective. And this figure doesn't even take into account the projects under way on private land, which are also continuing to make progress and will count towards the overall target. There's a real collective momentum around this issue.”

Over the coming weeks and months, residents will notice various types of work in every corner of the city. In particular, trees will be relocated or, if necessary, cut back, land will be prepared, and construction work will be carried out. There will also be essential infrastructure work, including the installation or upgrading of drinking water and wastewater networks in certain sectors. These worksites will generate a little more activity and traffic near the development sites. This work is necessary to ensure that development is sustainable, safe and compliant with standards. The public is asked to be patient and vigilant around the work sites, and to respect the signage in place to ensure everyone's safety.

The City of Edmundston would like to thank residents for their cooperation and understanding throughout this important phase of development. These housing projects will help revitalize our community, offer more residential choices and ensure a sustainable quality of life for all.

The City of Edmundston will continue its efforts to promote access to housing and support local developers in their initiatives. At the next City Council public meeting on June 17, details of the new apartment building on the corner of Canada Road and De l'Église Street will be announced. The public is welcome to attend.
