Fire & Safety Department reminds you that recreational fireworks are authorized but that certain safety factors must be taken into account. When handled well, fireworks can be fun and entertaining.
Before
Buy your fireworks from an authorized distributor and read the manufacturer's guidelines carefully. Choose an open space of at least 100ft x 100ft away from power lines, trees or combustible materials. Notify your local fire department of the time and location of your show and never carry fireworks in your pockets. New Brunswick's Forest Fire Watch should also be checked prior to lighting fires.
During
Do not let children handle, light fireworks, or play with them. An adult should light the fireworks one at a time and everyone should stay at least 33ft from where fireworks will be lit.
Fireworks should be ignited when properly positioned on the ground in a sand trap. They should not be held in hands and thrown. Remember to check the wind’s direction and that the landing area is clear.
Wear protective clothing such as gloves, goggles, ear protection and bring a flashlight. After lighting fireworks, move aside and don’t forget your small animals who are more sensitive to noise.
After
Collect and dispose of all used fireworks and other objects that may pose a fire hazard. Check the area carefully, including the landing area, to pick up any misfires and any debris caused by the blowout. Do not attempt to light failed fireworks.
Have a great summer and celebrate safely!
