Edmundston will soon have the largest solar panels rooftop project in the Atlantic region

In the summer of 2022, an amount of $8 million was announced to enable solar energy production at the Jean-Daigle Centre from the Department of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, the Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada and the department responsible for the New Brunswick Regional Development Corporation.

The Ameresco firm, in collaboration with Énergie Edmundston, will set up the Edmundston micro-grid project which will include 1 MW of solar panels mounted on the roof of two of its main sports facilities – the Jean-Daigle Centre and the Sports Pavilion – plus the addition of a 2 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The panels, once installed, will produce the equivalent of one megawatt of energy, which can be used to operate building systems and to help meet the City's energy consumption during peak hours, while reducing the municipality's carbon footprint.

“Work began earlier this year to ensure that the roofs of the Jean-Daigle Centre and the Sports Pavilion were reinforced for the installation of the panels. Work is also being carried out in the Jean-Daigle Centre parking lot to allow the installation of the battery energy storage system,” explained Kevin Kilfoil, project manager for Énergie Edmundston.

This is not only the community's first solar energy project, but the largest solar panel rooftop project in the Atlantic.

“This project involves and will greatly impact the community. Many local entrepreneurs have been hired to work on the project, which will be a learning incubator for students from the Cité-des-jeunes A.-M.-Sormany, UMCE and CCNB programs, » explained the Mayor of the City of Edmundston Eric Marquis. “This project will also allow us to achieve our objectives in line with the municipality’s 2024-2028 Environmental Action Plan,” concluded Mayor Marquis. The project should be completed and operational in the summer of 2025.

You will soon be able to follow the progress of the project in the Edmundston Energy section of the municipality's website.
