The provincial government has just announced changes to certain territorial boundaries included in the White Paper on Local Governance. This means that the Village of Rivière-Verte, the City of Edmundston and parts of surrounding LSDs will form a new Edmundston by 2023.
To this end, the administrations of Edmundston and Rivière-Verte are ready to collaborate and are eager to ensure that the transition will take place without too much upheaval.
"The provincial government is setting up a transition committee made up of experienced people, including our former colleague from the Edmundston City Council, Ms. Lise Ouellette, who will be able to support us in the process. There is also a committee that will look at place and street names. We hope that the transition will be smooth and that the community of Rivière-Verte will feel at home and welcomed in this new Edmundston," explains Edmundston Mayor Eric Marquis.
The mayor of Rivière-Verte, Mrs Lisa Parent, agrees. "We have always maintained that we have a lot in common with Edmundston. The restructuring work will be done step by step, in collaboration with the people of Edmundston and the provincial committees. We are convinced that the amalgamation will be well done and beneficial for both parties."
The municipal restructuring work will begin in early 2022 and be completed in 2023.
