Edmundston proposes emergency warming centre project

Edmundston proposes emergency warming centre project

To ensure the safety and dignity of people experiencing homelessness during the cold season, the City of Edmundston wants to set up a temporary emergency warming centre in the former provincial Department of Transportation offices on Saint-François Street.

This project remains conditional on obtaining a temporary zoning approval, which will be reviewed by the Planning Advisory Board on November 19. Once this step is completed, confirmation of provincial funding will allow the centre to open.

The centre would initially be open from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and always supervised by qualified personnel, including the City’s community outreach worker, in collaboration with community partners.

“This project is the result of a collective effort. Together, we want to ensure no one is left outside during the cold winter nights,” said Mayor Eric Marquis. He noted that Edmundston is taking the same approach as several other New Brunswick municipalities that have set up temporary centres. “We know that many people are currently facing difficult circumstances. In collaboration with our partners, we want to offer a compassionate and safe solution to get through the cold season.”

To ensure the centre integrates well with its surroundings, operations will be managed in a structured and respectful manner. A team will always be present, working with municipal and community services to ensure smooth operations and harmonious co-existence with the neighbourhood.

This project is part of a temporary, humanitarian approach aimed at responding quickly to an urgent situation while exploring, with regional partners, long-term sustainable solutions.

Why open a warming centre?

Winter conditions pose a real risk to people experiencing homelessness. This centre aims to prevent tragedies by offering a safe and supervised place to stay during the night.

Where is the centre located?

The centre will be set up in the former offices of the Department of Transportation. This building meets logistical needs and allows for a quick opening.

Will this be permanent?

No. This is a temporary measure, limited to the winter season. The special zoning request submitted to the Planning Advisory Committee is also temporary.

What are the hours of operation?

The centre will initially be open from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., providing rest for guests while minimizing impact on the surrounding neighbourhood. In case of extreme weather conditions, the centre could open during the day.

Who will be on site?

A community outreach worker from the City and trained staff will be on site at all times. Police and public safety services will work closely with the team.

How will good relations with neighbours be maintained?

The centre will be managed in a structured and respectful manner. A dedicated team, working in collaboration with municipal and community services, will ensure smooth operations and harmonious coexistence with nearby residents.

Who is funding the project?

The Government of New Brunswick is covering the costs of setup and operations.

How can I help?

Citizens can support community efforts by donating to local partner organizations that assist vulnerable individuals, including Atelier RADO.
