Forestry: agreement protocol between the City of Edmundston and l'UMCE

L'Université de Moncton, Edmundston campus (UMCE), and the City of Edmundston signed an agreement protocol on Friday, September 20, to strengthen the collaboration of both parties regarding education and management activities, training and research in urban forestry.

This agreement, now in force, will be renewable in five years. The agreement formalizes the excellent collaboration in urban forestry, dating back several decades, which exists between the Forestry School and the City of Edmundston.

The agreement will encourage the holding of educational training activities (laboratories, field trips, practical courses, etc.), internships and temporary jobs on the City of Edmundston's 700 hectares of forest and other municipal areas for UMCE forest management students. The agreement will also promote urban forestry  research projects development by professors or final thesis projects for students.

“Our students at the Edmundston campus Forestry School will benefit from learning through practical work taking place in the various municipal woodlots. As urban forestry is a field that is growing more and more globally, it is only natural to allow our students to have enriching experiences through projects that will be implemented with the City of Edmundston," declared the rector and vice-chancellor of the University of Moncton, Dr. Denis Prud'homme.

“We are very happy to collaborate with the UMCE by offering them our City as a natural laboratory where the projects will be coordinated with the municipality’s green spaces and urban forestry program. The agreement fits perfectly with the biodiversity axis of the 2024-2028 Environmental Action Plan adopted by the municipal council this year,” mentioned City of Edmundston Mayor, Eric Marquis.
