FRAUD: Warning about fake videos

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) reports an increase in fraud using deep fake videos—images manipulated with artificial intelligence to make it appear that famous people are endorsing fraudulent products or investments.

These videos circulate primarily on social media. They may appear real, but their goal is often to defraud people or spread misinformation.

How to protect yourself:

- Don't automatically believe a video of a celebrity promoting a product or investment.

- Be skeptical if it seems too good to be true or if the person says something unusual.

- Look for signs of editing: strange gestures, out-of-sync sounds, odd lighting.

- Check the facts with reliable sources.

- Be wary of questionable emails, websites, or phone numbers—even if they appear professional.

- Make sure that any investment company is properly registered

Do you think you're a victim of or witnessed fraud?

Report it to your local police at 506.739.2100 & the CAFC: 1-888-495-8501 or online at their website https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm

Even if you haven't lost any money, reporting it can help prevent further fraud.
