The Police Force reminds people of the importance of accident laws

Section 130(1) of the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act requires the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in property damage or injury to contact the Police Force.

Failure to report this type of accident is punishable by a $172.50 fine. Also, a driver involved in an accident must also stop his vehicle immediately, under penalty of a more severe fine.

When an accident occurs, it is important to call the emergency services if necessary, but also the Police Force so that an officer can write a concise accident report. In the situation where the people involved in an accident agree to settle the accident "amicably", a police report must still be written. The report will protect all parties involved if any one of them decides not to respect the “friendly” agreement.

If you are involved in an accident with a vehicle with no one on board, in a parking lot for example, section 128 of the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act requires you to find the owner. If you are unable to, you should make sure to leave a note explaining the situation and including your information, in a visible place.

In conclusion, it’s important to always stop and report an accident when it occurs, to avoid paying fines in addition to vehicle repair costs.

For more information, please contact the Police Force at 506.739.2100.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
