In view of the many events and activities taking place at City Hall Square almost daily during the summer season, the City of Edmundston has agreed to close to vehicular traffic the section of Court Street between Hill Street and Canada Road. Court Street will be therefore used according to its purpose when it was built.
This will ensure greater safety in the vicinity of the park and the Gilles-Guerrette Stage, while allowing the population and the many tourists to benefit from a convivial environment, enhancing the ambiance of this beautiful space in the heart of downtown.
This initiative was proposed for 2019, but implementation was postponed during health restrictions linked to the pandemic. "The City of Edmundston and Edmundston Downtown believe this initiative will make the space safer, as many motorists park on both sides of the street. This poses a risk to users of this much-appreciated and much-frequented space during the summer," explains Municipal Land Planning Coordinator, Pascal Hudon.
"Events multiply around City Hall Square, and the street is temporarily closed nearly 50% of the time between the opening of the Downtown Market and the start of the school year. There's plenty of parking nearby for nearby businesses and shops. We're delighted to see this space increase in value in this way," says Downtown Edmundston's general manager, Elaine Roussel.
Court Street will be open for pedestrians only from the Edmundston Jazz and Blues Festival until the start of the school year (September 3 in 2024). Additional temporary features should be added to further enhance the space.
