The Fire & Safety Department reminds you of the importance of having a functional portable fire extinguisher on hand. However, it must meet certain safety standards. Fire extinguishers must meet Canadian standards and have the “ULC” logo from the Underwriters’ Laboratory of Canada. You should also choose a multi-purpose powder extinguisher marked "ABC".
What does ABC mean?
A: puts out a fire caused by flammable materials such as wood, paper, fabric
B: puts out a fire caused by flammable liquids and gases
C: puts out a fire caused by a live electrical devices
There are single-use disposable fire extinguishers and rechargeable fire extinguishers. Disposable fire extinguishers have a limited lifespan and the date is written on the bottom of the device. Choose a lightweight model and learn how to use it by reading the manufacturer's instructions.
Where to install your fire extinguisher in the house?
Place it in plain view, near an exit. It should never be placed on the ground, but rather installed on a support specially designed for the extinguisher, at least 4 inches from the ground and at a maximum of 5 feet. Make sure it’s out of the reach of children. Avoid placing it too close to a potential fire source such as the stove and heaters and place the instructions for use nearby.
Maintenance and verification
Be sure to check the pressure of the extinguisher; the needle should be in the green section. Every year, it is recommended to have it inspected by a qualified person. If your fire extinguisher is refillable, have it refilled every 6 years or as soon as it has been used, even for just a few seconds.
