The Edmundston Police Force warns the public about a type of scam that is currently happening in the Edmundston region.
For the past few weeks, the Police Force has been investigating a scam that allows criminals to extract several thousands of dollars from its victims.
Their approach is bold but has worked a few times so far. Individuals communicate with victims by phone to let them know that someone close to them is either imprisoned or has been involved in a serious accident.
The scammer then tells his victims that an amount of money is necessary to release this person from jail or to receive medical treatment.
An individual then goes to a meeting place to collect the money from the victim. So far, a few victims have paid out several thousands of dollars before learning that the whole thing was fake.
The Edmundston Police Force therefore asks people to be vigilant to avoid being trapped in this type of scam, which can cost them a lot.
They are also asking anyone who may have information to help identify the scammers, to contact the Edmundston Police Force at 506.739.2100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
