Warning: Individuals fraudulently posing as representatives of insulation or refrigeration companies

The Edmundston Police Force has received several reports concerning individuals going door-to-door or making telephone calls, who present themselves as representatives of companies operating in the insulation or refrigeration sectors. In some cases, these individuals are also said to claim to be associated with an NB Power program.

The reported scenario
According to reports, these individuals are offering free attic inspections, particularly to check the insulation or for mould. Once on site, they show residents photographs purporting to demonstrate problems (mould, poor insulation, etc.), and then pressure them into agreeing to remedial work quickly. The reported costs for this work are said to run into several thousand dollars.

No door-to-door sales permit has been issued
It's important to note that the City of Edmundston has not issued any door-to-door sales permits for this type of activity. Residents are advised to always ask anyone who comes to their home whether the company holds a door-to-door sales permit issued by the City, and to insist on seeing it before entering into any discussion.

Safety advice
The public is advised to remain vigilant:

  • Do not let strangers into your home without first checking their credentials;
  • Verify the person’s identity and their credentials with the company they claim to represent;
  • Be wary of unsolicited offers and pressure to act quickly;
  • Take the time to obtain other quotes before agreeing to any work whatsoever.
