During the summer season, you still need to prevent the risk of fires

It's finally summer! The City of Edmundston Fire Department wants you to have a safe camping season. Whether you're camping in the wild, RVing, on the road, or stationary, it's imperative to identify all hazards, both for your health, safety, and the environment.

Before heading out in your RV

- Check propane-powered equipment for potential leaks

- If you detect a rotten egg smell, it may be your RV's continuously charging batteries that are overheating

- Do not plug space heaters into an extension cord, but directly into an outlet approximately 1 meter from any combustible material

- Install your generator 7 meters from your RV

- Check the RV's power cord to ensure it doesn't overheat

- Do not use all your electrical appliances at the same time; this can increase the risk of the power cord overheating

Good things to do every year

- Make an appointment for an annual inspection with your mechanic.

- Install good smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, change the batteries every time the clocks change, and replace them every ten years.

- Check the condition of your portable fire extinguisher.

Campfires and BBQs

Campfires are often memorable moments spent with family and friends. In general, it is recommended to leave a safe distance between the fire and your tent or RV. Check the provincial fire index, build small fires in a designated safe area (fire pit or outdoor fireplace), and never leave the fire unattended.

When it comes to BBQs, the number one tip is to clean up any grease buildup inside and ensure a clear distance for heat to spread. Also, remember to turn off the propane cylinder(s) after each use.

With that, the Fire Safety Service wishes you a safe and happy summer!
