Municipal Consolidation: The City of Edmundston and the Village of Green River take the first steps

At a special public meeting, the Edmundston City Council, with the approval of the Village of Rivière-Verte leaders, is taking the first steps towards the upcoming municipal amalgamation.

It should be noted that the Department of Local Government and Local Governance Reform proposed a few months ago new municipal consolidations and amalgamations throughout New Brunswick. As a result, the Department proposed the creation of a new entity in Madawaska County through the amalgamation of the City of Edmundston, the Village of Rivière-Verte, part of the LSD of Saint-Jacques and part of the LSD of Saint-Joseph.

The provincial government has appointed a team to facilitate the transition. However, certain steps must first be initiated by way of municipal resolutions. Thus, the Edmundston City Council, with the collaboration of the Rivière-Verte Municipal Council, has just adopted a resolution to define the name of the new municipal entity; to create a new electoral district and to integrate the Rivière-Verte municipal staff into the Edmundston municipal organization.

The elected officials agreed that the new entity created will be called Edmundston. In addition, an electoral ward will be created with the territory of the Village of Rivière-Verte in which two councillors will be elected during the November 2022 by-election. Finally, the staff of the Village of Rivière-Verte integrate the Edmundston municipal organization. The Rivière-Verte Municipal Council will also adopt a similar resolution at a future public meeting.

"We have just laid the first foundations of this municipal consolidation, in collaboration with our colleagues from Rivière-Verte. We remain confident that this amalgamation will continue to evolve harmoniously," explained Edmundston Mayor Eric Marquis.

As for the two LSDs that will be integrated into the new grouping, the Province will be responsible for overseeing each step since these two areas do not have elected representatives.
