The Riviera Trails were officially inaugurated this Sunday, October 16. This project had won the popular vote, along with $30,000, as part of the very first popular Budget initiative in Edmundston.
One of the instigators of the project, Mr. Mathieu Roussel, had proposed the project, which consists of improving the trails located between the Parc Riviera neighbourhood, the Petit Témis bicycle path and the Fraser-Edmundston Golf Club to make them usable year-round and accessible to the entire population.
The project mainly consisted of cutting branches, removing fallen or unsafe trees, adding pipes, and finally adding gravel over long distances in the forest. Signage was also installed and entry points clearly identified.
"My City Council colleagues and I are extremely proud to see this project come to fruition. In addition to receiving the most votes from the public, it is perfectly in line with part of our strategic plan for the enhancement of our green spaces," explained Edmundston Mayor Eric Marquis.
For the project's spokesperson, Mr. Mathieu Roussel, this project first caught the attention of people in the Riviera Park sector, but quickly turned into a true community project that benefits the entire population. "These trails are easily accessible and almost in the heart of the municipality. They connect to the bike path and the golf club. We are very happy to have been able to give them a new life thanks to the great Participatory Budget initiative.
The second winning project, which was awarded $10,000 and consists of revamping a site on Nadeau Street in the western sector of the city that serves as the entrance to the Madawaska Trails, to make it a park, should be inaugurated in a few weeks.
