Threatening communication forces evacuation of Cité des Jeunes A.-M.-Sormany

The Edmundston Police Force confirms that they were called to the Cité des Jeunes A.-M.-Sormany late this morning (October 20, 2022) following the interception of a threatening communication to the safety of students and staff at the school.

Police were immediately dispatched to the school to evaluate the threat and secure the school. After assessment and discussion with the principal and the District scolaire francophone du Nord-Ouest (DSFNO), it was agreed to evacuate the students. The procedure was carried out in a safe and calm manner without incident.

The police force is continuing to investigate the threatening communication. "We are working closely with the school staff and the School District administration and are confident of a speedy resolution," said Police Chief Steve Robinson.

Police officers are continuing their investigation. In fact, the force is asking for the public's help if anyone has information that could lead to the identification of the person(s) responsible for causing the disruption at the high school.

Since the Police Force is confident that there is no longer a threat, the DSFNO confirms that the CDJ will be open tomorrow. The Director General of the DSFNO, Mr. Luc Caron, says that the priority is always the safety of students and staff. The police force will be on site during the day.

"We are relieved with the outcome and would like to thank the parents for their understanding. The school is ready to welcome and accompany students and staff back to school tomorrow.
