The City of Edmundston has been a proud municipal partner of Earth Day for five years now. April 22nd of each year, is a key moment to unite municipalities committed to having a positive impact on the environment. Many municipalities across Canada are proactive and adopting bold measures to participate in the ecological transition and provide a healthier environment for their residents.
SOLSTICE PROJECT
In collaboration with Ameresco, Énergie Edmundston has begun implementing the SOLSTICE project, a microgrid including 1 MW of solar panels installed on the municipality's two main sports facilities, the Sports Pavilion and the Jean-Daigle Centre. A 2 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) is also included. Together, these elements will produce the equivalent of one megawatt of energy, which can be used to operate municipal building systems and help meet the City's peak energy consumption, while reducing the municipality's carbon footprint.
"The term SOLSTICE refers to an astronomical event marking the changing seasons and the abundance of solar energy. This symbolic connection underscores the project's objective: to capture this renewable energy to supply the local community with green electricity," explained Edmundston Mayor Éric Marquis. "The City of Edmundston is thus affirming its commitment to being a driver of sustainable energy transmission for the region and a model for surrounding communities. This ambitious project aims to install the largest rooftop solar panel array in the Atlantic region. This project, which is a source of pride for us, is expected to be completed and operational by the summer of 2025," concluded Mayor Marquis.
COMMUNITY CHORE ACTIVITIES - SCHOOLS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC
Throughout the week, members of the municipal teams will be collecting garbage with students from the region's elementary and secondary schools. On Saturday, April 26, the entire community is invited to the Bill Turgeon Stadium parking lot for a major community cleanup to prepare Petit-Sault Park for the warmer months.
