Telephone fraud in progress

The Edmundston Police Force reports that citizens have received calls informing them that they were victims of credit card fraud.

The call display shows a name and a common number, and the person on the line say they work for the fraud department.

This person will try to convince you that your credit card has been used without your permission and try to confirm your mailing address in order to send you a new card. These types of calls (automated or not) are fraudulent. Government officials do not use this kind of practice to communicate with people who have been victims of fraud. When you receive such a call, don't give in to pressure or panic, just hang up.

We remind you that it’s very important not to give personal and/or banking information over the phone, or on the internet, to anyone who communicates with you under false pretenses, to get information from you.

This type of fraud can be reported to the Edmundston Police Force at 739-2100 or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Center (CAFC) at 1-888-495-8501.
