Garbage doesn't grow on its own...

Garbage doesn't grow on its own...

The City of Edmundston's Public Works Department Green Spaces Sector and Downtown Edmundston, want to raise awareness regarding the importance of keeping downtown Edmundston clean.

The City of Edmundston has by-law 04R2013: Collection and disposal of garbage and recyclable materials which regulates the disposal of garbage at the residential level. However, businesses are responsible for collecting and disposing of trash on their properties.

The concentration of several businesses downtown seems to contribute to the problem related to the disposal of food and drink packaging, plastics and paper. Packaging, bags and various receipts are too often found on the sidewalks and in the streets of our city center, even if many trash cans are already available at City Hall Square. City of Edmundston's Municipal by-law 04R2013 stipulates that:

  • Pursuant to this by-law, no person shall permit to leave garbage, recyclable materials or other trash in a street, in a public place or on a private land, whether or not he or she is the owner.
  • No person shall deposit any garbage or recyclable materials (…) (iii) on any public, private, commercial, industrial or institutional property.
  • If a violation of any of the provisions of this By-law is found to have been committed, the Municipality reserves the right to order the removal of the garbage at the expense of the owner or offender.

Potential initiatives

Possible solutions will be considered in order to respond to this ongoing situation. At all times, and especially during the Great Holiday Spree which runs until December 22nd, the City of Edmundston asks you to please throw your waste in the trash cans, or to keep it with you until you can dispose of it elsewhere.

It's everyone’s responsibility to keep our city centre clean, regardless of the season.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
