adopt a hydrant!

You can help us protect yourself and your neighbourhood by adopting a fire hydrant during the winter season!

  • Seconds count in a fire and you can help save lives by clearing the hydrant near your home and taking a proactive approach after a snowfall.
  • This citizen contribution can be significant for your safety and that of your neighbours.
  • By registering for the Adopt a Hydrant program, be assured that the responsibility for snow removal will remain with the City of Edmundston. Snow plowers will continue their rounds and remove the snow from hydrants.
  • If, for whatever reason, you cannot remove the snow from your adopted hydrant, our employees will do it during their rounds.
  • Your contribution reduces the period that the hydrant is not accessible after a snowfall without putting all the responsibility on you.
  • In fact, your contribution is a small citizen gesture without great responsibility.
  • To register, you can call the Fire Department at 506.739.2117 or register online by completing THIS FORM.

fire hydrants

The City of Edmundston has a complete system of fire hydrants to ensure water supply to our pumper trucks in case of fire. There are over 700 hydrants throughout the city.

While hydrant maintenant is the City's responsability, citizens must make sure hydrants are free of any obstruction for a distance of 1 metre or 3 feet at all times. This standard is set by the National Fire Prevention Code (NFPC) currently in effect in Edmundston.

This means fences, trees, shrubs and snow must not obstruct any hydrant. Please note, however, that a hydrant snow clearing program is in effect in our city.

fire prevention program

Your Fire and Safety Department offers an interesting prevention program which aims at making sure that each residence in Edmundston has a smoke detector.

residential visits

Each year, from May until October, our firefighters visit your homes to offer tips on fire prevention. In collaboration with different organizations and businesses, we distribute free smoke detectors to homes that don't have one.

If you do NOT have a smoke detector, please contact your local fire brigade. Our firefighters will be more than happy to give you one at no charge. Let's just make sure that Edmundston is safe at all times.
