The population was dismayed to discover, a few days ago, that road signs near the Saint-Jacques and Saint-Basile sectors had been modified and that the names of the communities had been blanked out.
Immediately after being made aware of this situation, Mayor Eric Marquis and the municipal administration contacted the Department of Transportation to request corrective action and to understand the reasons behind the modifications.
"In 2018, after accepting the recommendations of the place-naming committee and modifying problematic street names that were appearing double and triple throughout the city, we submitted a request to the Department of Transportation to have the new street names reflected on road signs, a matter of ensuring safety and proper orientation for tourists, among others," explains Edmundston Mayor Eric Marquis. We were surprised last week to see that the community names had been removed from the signs.”
In fact, the request made to the Transportation Department consisted, for the Saint-Jacques sector, of adding Isidore-Boucher Boulevard, Bérubé Road, De l'Acadie Boulevard and Mont-Farlagne Road. For the Saint-Basile sector, the City had requested that Route 144 be added to the signs. At no time was there any question of removing the community names, especially as they remain in the postal addresses of citizens.
"Representatives of the Transportation Department have confirmed that corrections will be made as soon as possible to the road sign near the Saint-Basile sector. As for the sign near Saint-Jacques, it will have to be resized to ensure compliance with standards and will then be able to include street and community names," confirms Mayor Marquis. We understand that it was an honest mistake by provincial employees and are confident that this kind of error won't happen again.”
