Work begins on Edmundston's first rain garden

Oct 30, 2025

Work begins on Edmundston's first rain garden

On Monday, November 3, the City of Edmundston will begin construction of its very first rain garden, in the upper section of Richelieu Park. This new ecological feature, designed to collect surface water, represents a first for Edmundston and is part of a sustainable approach to stormwater management.

Located close to a new apartment building currently under construction, the rain garden will be laid out in a natural and attractive way, with plants that will absorb water and encourage it to infiltrate into the soil. The aim is to reduce overloading of the storm sewer system and prevent water from accumulating in neighbouring streets.

The construction work, which is being carried out by contractor Conrad Lavoie et Fils, should be partly completed by the end of November, depending on weather conditions. Planting, seeding and landscaping will follow in spring 2026.

"The Richelieu Park rain garden will serve as a model for other projects of this kind. It's a simple, ecological and aesthetic way of helping nature to manage the rain," points out infrastructure coordinator Louis Ruest.

The City of Edmundston expects this project to serve as a showcase for other green initiatives on its territory.
