Municipal land sold to local company for rental housing

Following a recent public call for proposals, City Council has agreed to sell a piece of municipal land at 392 Victoria Street for $21,500 to a local company that is proposing to build a rental housing building.

The Beyond Sustainable Corporation team is composed of Alain Bélanger, Scott Philippe and Jeff Raymond. The project they have proposed responds to needs identified in the recent municipal housing study, which clearly showed a critical lack of affordable housing.

The project will consist of a three-storey apartment building with 18 units, 12 one-bedroom and six three-bedroom. Fourteen of these will be affordable housing units according to Department of Social Development standards.

The Request for Proposals included an evaluation grid for elements including proposed purchase price, footprint ratio, number of residential units, number of three-bedroom units, number of affordable units, landscaping, and number of storeys.

In addition, the new project will be designed with sustainability in mind, combining state-of-the-art green building techniques with attractive and functional design to create a living space that is not only comfortable and affordable, but also in harmony with the environment.

"We are very excited about the project to be carried out by Beyond Sustainable Corporation. This is the second initiative of its kind in the past year, where the City has offered affordable properties for the construction of housing. We believe that this is a great collaboration to alleviate the lack of housing in Edmundston," explains Mayor Eric Marquis.

The project should be completed by the winter of 2024-2025.
