A new environmental initiative for Edmundston

In an effort to strengthen its actions to support the environment and biodiversity, the Municipality of Edmundston announces the implementation of a new initiative to reduce mowing of certain lawn parcels in the city. This approach aims to create environments more conducive to local flora and fauna, improve soil quality, make the city more resilient and raise awareness of the importance that everyone should adopt more sustainable maintenance practices.

" The areas chosen to reduce mowing are sites that do not house any municipal infrastructure and are not used for recreational or cultural activities," explained Daniel Gautreau, Green Spaces Coordinator. "Therefore, there is no reduction in services for residents. The municipal lands chosen are vacant and have no operational use. This is an interesting opportunity to improve mowing operations, implement differentiated land management, and integrate environmental protection considerations,” concluded Daniel Gautreau.

People will be able to identify the designated municipal areas. Signs are installed on the sites that will be:

1 - No mowing or

2 - Late mowing

Aside from reducing operational costs, reducing mowing brings many environmental benefits, such as:

- Creation of habitats for pollinators and native flowers

- Reduction of the municipal contribution of CO2 emissions

- Lower soil temperatures in uncut areas and a reduction in local temperatures

- Better water retention in the area

These decisions are fully in line with a sustainable development approach, combining environmental protection and responsible resource management.
